CNA license classes: a pathway to a rewarding career
Jobs are currently hard to come by, but there are careers available in a field that will reward you in many more ways than just earning a paycheck.
Taking a certified nurses’ assistant (CNA) license class is the first step to a fulfilling career helping the elderly, the sick or others unable to care for themselves. A CNA, or nurse’s aide, comforts patients while helping them perform daily activities such as showering, dressing, eating and going to the bathroom, as well as taking vital signs and recording patient data. Nursing assistants work in nursing facilities, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, long-term hospice and in home-health settings.
Nurse aides are an integral part of a health care team, since they work most closely with the patients and need to discern when nurses should be alerted if a patient’s condition changes. Nursing assistants also need to think clearly in emergency and stressful situations, and know proper procedures.
You can qualify as a CNA by enrolling in a two-year college or specialty school that offers CNA license classes, or go through a program offered by a nearby nursing institution. Going the second route can often result in finishing the course in as fast as six weeks. Some facilities may also pay you while you take the course.
A CNA license class will teach you everything you’ll need to know to help improve someone’s quality of life. The classes provide hands on experience and teach aides how to communicate with their patients. Organizational skills, especially for tracking vital signs and patient data, are a must, as is patience.
Once you’ve completed a CNA license class, you will have to take a theoretical and practical licensing exam. Passing the test will earn certification, which increases credibility in the field. During the clinical exam, you will be required to show what you have learned by performing duties.
The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the need for nurse’s assistants will grow by 28 percent by 2016.
Becoming a CNA offers job security, since there will always be a need for good caregivers, as well as the opportunity to help others.
